Lingerie Gifts for a Bridal Shower

Bridal LingerieBuying lingerie for a bride to be is a time honored and beloved tradition. The kind of lingerie that you buy for that occasion may depend on a number of things, though. If you are going for the pure shock value, trying to get a few laughs, then opt for the trashiest, sheerest and raunchiest of lingerie and wait for the blushing to begin. If you are buying something that the bride is going to love and be excited about, you might want to choose to go a little more classic and classy with your choice.

Ask brides if they wore their lingerie after they were married and you might be surprised by their answers. Some are going to say they did- they choose to wear their bridal shower gifts, not only on their wedding night but for many other nights after the honeymoon was over. More than likely it’s not just the frilly, dainty white lingerie they have slipped into either. There are those frisky brides that like the stuff that was meant to shock them, which means that you have to be prepared for your “joke” to backfire on you.

Traditionally, the lingerie that a bride wears for her wedding night is delicate, white and almost virginal in nature. Not every woman in the world is interested in pure white or lacy items, because it just isn’t them at all. Some women would like a different color. If you know the bride fairly well, you will know her favorite colors or the color of her wedding scheme. Those colors might be a more welcome choice for the bride.

There are potential problems of course when choosing these types of gifts. If you don’t know the correct size, you can cause some very seriously hurt feelings and embarrassment in front of everyone at the shower. If you don’t know the right size, then you could discreetly ask around, or you could choose to give a gift certificate instead. For some women, this might be more welcome than actually buying lingerie, because it allows them to buy not only the perfect size, but the exact color and style that they want to have.

Finally, you should also consider the people who will be at the bridal shower. Traditionally it was a woman’s only party, but in these more modern times, it is sometimes a mixed gender event with the groom and his friends present for all of the fun. Of course some women would prefer that their wedding night lingerie is a complete surprise for their new husband.

How To Find The Right Bra

How you choose your lingerie is important. Statistics show that the majority of women wear the wrong size bra. Suzan Nethero, known as ‘The Bra Whisperer’ uses a holistic approach to choosing your bra. She believes in using your current bra to determine your correct size. By seeing how that bra fits, she can see what needs to be done to fit you better. Susan’s whole approach is to make you feel better about yourself, to give you more confidence and other options that you might not have tried before.

“Nethero says the most common mistake that she sees women make in choosing a bra is that the bra band is too big and the cup size is too small.

“Women go up in the band size to get the right depth when they should really be going up in the cup size and keep the band firm,” she notes.”

Chemise and Cami Sets for 2011

Chemise and Cami SetsSummer is the best time to find your chemise and cami sets; time for the cooler and more comfortable lingerie choices overall. When the temperature is hovering around the melting zone, it is not time to pull out the leather bustier or the heavy brocade corset. Instead, think of wearing a loose and comfortable chemise that glides over your body and allows you to feel flirty and feminine, but still lets you be cool and comfortable. Cami sets can be equally cool and breezy without having to sacrifice style for comfort at all.

Back in the old days your garment of choice was the chemise. What we think of as a very simple easy to wear item now, actually has a very long and storied past- all the way back to the ancient Romans in fact. Men and women throughout history wore the chemise as an undershirt beneath their clothing, protecting their other clothing from body sweat and odor. The chemise could then be washed more frequently than other clothing items. Men wore linen shirts, often called tunics, which in French then became the chemise or shirt. Women wore slips that were called by the same name, as well as a simply styled dress which was also called a chemise.

If you prefer a more modern look, the cami set can be the perfect answer. Again, you can wear these under your clothing as part of your underwear or you can wear them as sleepwear on a particularly hot and steamy night. The basic cami set is a camisole and panty and comes in every color that you can think of. They also come in a wide array of fabric choices so that you can wear your cami set during the cooler months as well.

Both of these options can be more forgiving to wear when you gain a little bit of weight, or for the first few months of a pregnancy. They are also a great option to wear when you are not feeling well or when you just want to be a little more comfortable.  But, before you get the impression that they are just for comfort and casual times, consider this: either a camisole or cami set can be a gorgeous thing to wear on a very special night with the person of your dreams.

Lingerie and Pregnancy

For many women, pregnancy is all about the baby and things such as lingerie go by the wayside. They forget that despite the two hot globs of flesh they once called their breasts and the bowling ball sized mound in their midsection, they are still women. Lingerie is still important, not only for comfort and appearance, but to remind you that you are still a woman. We need that reminder from time to time.

Of course, your lingerie has to play an important role in your comfort during the day. A good, supportive bra is very important, to make sure that you are keeping your burgeoning figure lifted and in great comfort. Remember, your bra size may change several times during your pregnancy and towards the end; your breasts may start leaking, making this a perfect time to consider using a nursing bra.

Your panties should also be of a soft material, able to support your growing baby bump. Some women opt for higher waisted panties at this time, while others choose different types. Some women continue to wear their favorite’s right up to the point of delivery, just leaving the waist band under their tummy.

But what about night time? Does pregnancy say that you have to wear that oversized tee shirt and sloppy pajama pants for the whole nine months? Surely not. You might feel like wearing those during the early months, when you are feeling a little queasy, but once you get to the fourth month or so, you might like a little bit of lace and a sexier look. This is the month of pregnancy that many women start feeling a little more sexy, so they might really enjoy great lingerie during this period. Provided their lingerie is not causing them any pain at all, any lingerie that a woman chooses to wear is fine.

The later stages of pregnancy may be a good time to start experimenting with new shapes and types of lingerie. For instance, since you should skip wearing a corset or bustier during the final months, it might be a good time to check out silky teddies or flowing negligees. That last few weeks are a trying time for a woman and it is a good idea to splurge on something that is not for the baby, is not pink, mint green, yellow or blue. She will be swamped in a few weeks, trying to keep a demanding baby happy and should use this time to still feel like a woman. Lingerie is her connection back to her femininity.

Lingerie Fabrics – What is Best

Babydoll LingerieGather a group of women in a room and ask them what the best fabric is for lingerie and you are going to get some very different answers. For some women, only silk will brush against their body while for others, cotton is fine for summer but something with a little more heft is needed for the colder months. Choosing your lingerie is a very personal thing- something that is between you and your body.

The Lightweight Fabrics

For some women, the lighter the lingerie’s fabric, the better. Lace, chiffon, silk and the blended fabrics make for lighter than air lingerie that feels like a whisper on the skin and doesn’t add bulk to clothing. It can be cooler to wear in the summer or in warmer areas of the world.

The Pros: lightweight, cool and usually breathable can make the lingerie more comfortable to wear.

Corset - LingerieThe Cons: not all lightweight lingerie is created equally and most of it is not meant to be all that supportive, particularly to the larger busted. They can be okay to wear for night time or for relaxing but not for day to day wear.

The Mid Weight Fabrics

Cotton is a common fabric choice and is often a favorite for lingerie because it is soft, easily cared for and readily accepts deep, rich dyes. For those that have sensitive skin, cotton might be one of the only materials that can be worn.

The Pros:  Can come in a variety of thicknesses, cotton lingerie is soft and very wearable. It is easy to care for and comes in a very wide range of colors and designs.

The Cons: Can pill or fade and may not be considered very stylish to some people.

The Heavy Fabrics

Satins, heavy silks and damasks are all meant to be worn as special occasion lingerie in most cases. They might be the most expensive type of lingerie in most cases and might be a little stiff to the average wearer.

The Pros: Satin makes everything feel a little more decadent, even a simple bra and panty set. Damasks are dramatic and perfect for heavy boning work, especially in fetish wear corsets.

The Cons: These can be very expensive and need specialized care, including cleaning and storage so that they last. Some of these materials are limited in size or style and some are limited by designer.
