Once upon a time, silk underwear was only for the wealthy because it was expensive and extravagant and a major chore to care for. These days, however, silk is less expensive and easier to care for than ever before. Be warned: once you wear pure silk, you may never want to go back to anything else! If you do invest in a few pairs of silk underwear, it is best that you treat them well, and wash them so that they stay new and beautiful for as long as possible.
Washing and Drying
There are many washing machines that have a delicate setting which can allow you to wash your silk underwear along with other delicate, easily destroyed items. If you do not want to trust your silk underwear to the machine however, you can wash it in the sink with a small squirt of nothing more than your shampoo. You can hang them over the side of the tub to dry, but never outside because the sun can fade them and damage the fibers.
You can also put them in the dryer on very low heat to tumble dry, however make sure that you are pulling them out of the dryer as soon as they are dry to lessen the problem of wrinkling and creasing.
Ironing
If you do put your silk underwear into the dryer, they will come out wrinkled and crinkled beyond repair. You can iron your silky underwear, being very careful to only use very low heat and to continually move the iron around to prevent scorching. Remember: if you can smell them, you have cooked them.
Storing
Your silk underwear should not just be shoved into the drawer where they might get snagged or torn. You should consider using small plastic boxes with lids that can prevent the silk underwear from being torn or mangled in the middle of your everyday underwear and panties. Treat your silk underwear like it is special because it is.
