Halloween Costume: A Head to Toe Checklist for Getting it Right

Everyone has a favorite go to Halloween costume that they like. That costume gets a lot of wear over the years and there are instances where you don’t know that you are ripped and torn or missing pieces until you get to an event and everyone has already seen your pale pink flowered panties. (Always a chic look, by the way.) to avoid any such mishaps the next time you are pulling out a favorite or even when you are wearing a brand new look, use the following checklist and you should be good to go.

You’re Head, Hair, Wig, Hats, Tiaras and More

Starting at the top of the Halloween costume: will you be wearing a wig, a hat, a crown or anything else. Or will you be styling your own fabulous locks into an amazing ‘do? Before you head out, give yourself one more fluff, one more spritz of extra hold hairspray or one more sexy head shake to be sure you are spot on.

You’re Face

If you have a Halloween costume that involves wearing a mask, there are several steps to take before you wear it:

1. Check for fit. It should be comfortable but not so big that you have to keep pushing it back up. For instance, I can comfortably wear a children’s mask because I have a small head and a small face.
2. Check for Vision: you should be able to see out of the eye holes without obstruction or problems.
3. Can you breathe?

Your Halloween costume might need makeup instead. The safety checks for that:

1. Do an allergy test on products before using them, especially on sensitive skin.
2. Do not use makeup from Halloween’s gone by, especially if they are open. Also, any makeup that has an off scent or does not look right should be tossed immediately.
3. Read the instructions and the guidelines for the kits that you have: some have colors that should never be used near the eyes.
4. Never improvise with items especially near the eyes, nose and mouth.

Check your Halloween costume for fit and for any defects ideally a few weeks before Halloween so that you can find a replacement if you need to. Twirl around in a full length mirror, inspecting yourself from every angle so that you can see if there are tears or holes or if you are not going to be happy with the way that it is fitting you in general.
